Thomas Elliot was a childhood friend to Bruce Wayne; like Bruce, he was born to a wealthy family in Gotham City. In their youth, Tommy and Bruce would play a Stratego-esque minifgure game; a child prodigy capable of advanced strategic planning, Tommy used the game to teach Bruce how to think like his enemies and use their strategies against them. These games would prove useful during Bruce's adulthood after he became Batman.
However, in comparison to Bruce, Tommy lead a miserable early life. While Thomas and Martha Wayne would treat their son with love and affection, Tommy was frequently subjected to physical abuse by his father, while his frail and submissive mother did nothing to defend him, willing for herself and her son to endure as much abuse her husband dealt to them so she could keep her lavish lifestyle, unwilling to return to her former life of poverty. Tommy would grow to despise both of his parents, but regardless of their failings, the ensured he was well educated, particularly in the philosophies of Aristotle, which he continued to quote well into his adult life.
